MADRID-Forecasters have issued an extraordinary warning as heavy snow and rainfall is expected over the next 24 hours in central and western Spain.

Heavy snow was forecast in upland areas near Madrid and Castilla La Mancha, forecasters claimed.

A general bad weather warning, issued by the Spanish Weather Office, also said  heavy rain was expected in the far western province of Extremadura and Galicia.

Up to 40cm of snow could fall in mountainous regions near Madrid up to 1,800 metres altitude.

And up to 15 cm of snow was expected over the next two days at altitudes of between 1,300-1,800 metres.

Similar snowfalls were also forecast in Castilla La Mancha in the province of Guadalajara.

Forecasters also said in Cuenca there could be up to 15cm of snow at altitudes above 1,500 metres.

Meanwhile, in the province of Extremadura, up to 60 litres of rain per square metre was expected over the next 12 hours.

And in Galicia, in the areas of Pontevedra and Ourense, there could be up to 60 litres of rain over the next 12 hours.
