MADRID — Heavy snow and rain across many parts of Spain have caused traffic chaos.
Fifteen regions have been affected by the bad weather which was set to continue through to Tuesday.
The areas which are forecast to get the brunt of the cold snap are Catalonia, Valencia, Castilla y Leon and Andalusia, where heavy snow is expected.
Downpours are also expected in Catalonia, Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Melilla and the Balearic Islands.
Twenty-seven mountain roads have been closed across Spain because of the bad weather.
Ice on the road has also caused road closures in Alicante, Almería, Ávila, Barcelona, Palencia, Salamanca, Teruel and Zamora.
Motorists had to put chains on their wheels to get through the snow in Guadalajara, Huesca, León and Valencia.
In Alicante, traffic on the main CV-803 road near Onil has been stopped while another six smaller roads have also been closed.
In Teruel, 11 roads were closed.
In the province of Palencia, 36 small villages containing about 3,604 people have been cut off, police said.
