PALMA DE MALLORCA — Police arrested the head of urban planning of the Balearics Islands regional government and the mayor of a town in Majorca for alleged corruption linked to property deals.

Jaume Massot, was arrested on Monday with Eugenio Hidalgo, mayor of Andratx, in an operation led by the anti-corruption prosecutor.

Police carried out raids at a number of addresses, sources said.

Hidalgo has been taken to the central police station in Palma.

He is accused of perverting the course of justice, money laundering, urban planning offences and for having committed acts prohibited for public servants.

The charges are thought to relate to a parking complex in the town of San Telmo, near Andratx.

It is the latest in a long series of police operations in recent months to stamp out civic corruption linked to property speculation.

The most high-profile was the ongoing police operation against the multi-million euro scandal involving Marbella city council.

After the arrest of the mayor and all the leading figures in the council, Madrid dissolved the authority.
