ALICANTE — The head of a Real IRA terrorist cell which was allegedly smuggling cigarettes from Spain to Britain to finance the dissident Republican group's activities has been arrested.

Spanish police detained Sean O'Feach in Rojales, near Alicante.

On 7 May, police arrested two other Real IRA terrorists in Spain.

In an operation, codenamed Booming, Thomas Philip C. and Aaron Wiliam J., were detained on the Costa del Sol.

The group allegedly packed two lorries full of 498,000 packets of cigarettes worth EUR 1,058,000, which were to be smuggled into the UK.

Once there, the cigarettes would be sold, making a huge profit for the terrorist group.

The Real IRA, a breakaway group of the IRA, opposes the peace process with Britain.

The group's most notorious attack was in 1998, when it bombed the town of Omagh in Northern Ireland killing 29 people.

Smuggling tobacco is the group's principal source of finances.
