MADRID — Spain's meteorological institute has declared an extreme drought after the driest spring for nearly 60 years.

The national meteorological institute said that Spain had not experience such drought conditions since 1947.

The cause of the drought have been connected with the effects of global warming.

In neighbouring Portugal there have been warnings that the country may be facing the worst drought for 300 years.
