Gas explosion burns five in Canaries: authority
Five people suffered burns in a gas explosion at a tourist hotel in Spain's Canary Islands on Wednesday that caused a thousand people to be evacuated, local authorities said.
The blast struck as a truck was pumping gas into a tank for a spa in the Cordial luxury hotel in Playa de Mogan, a resort on Gran Canaria, local town hall spokeswoman Gema Suarez told AFP.
"There was a gas leak, we do not know exactly where, then an explosion in the hotel," she said.
She added that five people including four hotel staff and one tourist were burned, four "very seriously". Two had burns on 90 percent of their bodies.
"They evacuated 1,000 tourists, but the management thinks they will be able to go back because the structure is not damaged," Suarez said.
