Gas blast kills Norwegian tourist in Canaries
A 55-year-old Norwegian female tourist died Thursday after suffering burns over her entire body in a hotel gas explosion on the Spanish Canary Islands, a hospital official said.
A tanker truck was delivering gas in the luxury Cordial hotel in Mogan, on Gran Canaria island, when the fuel exploded Wednesday.
The blast caved in part of a spa roof and injured six people including the Norwegian tourist.
The tourist was "burned over 100 percent of her body" said a spokeswoman for the island's Doctor Negrin hospital.
The victim's name was not given.
Among the others injured, "a woman burned over 90 percent of her body is still in a very serious condition in the intensive care unit," the spokeswoman said.
About 1,000 tourists were briefly evacuated after the blast.
Mogan is a tourist village of about 20,000 people in the southwest of Gran Canaria island.
