MADRID — More than 50 people were arrested in an operation against a gang which raided the home of the Tous family who run Spain's most famous jewellery firm.

In raids across Spain, police detained mostly Albanian Kosovos who were members of the gang which tried to raid the home of the Tous family last year in Sant Fruitos de Bages, near Barcelona.

The head of security at the Tous residence, Lluis Coromines, opened fire and shot dead one of the gang in the bungled raid.

Coromines currently faces charges of the death.

Raids took place in the Basque Country and in Castro Urdiales, in Cantabria, northern Spain, Catalonia, Madrid and Valencia.

The Tous family owns the biggest jewellery company in Spain.
