MADRID - Members of a brutal gang of thieves accused of carrying out at least 50 armed robberies in international-call centres and raping the female employees of several of them, have been arrested in Madrid, authorities said Wednesday.

The thieves, who became known as the Silver Gun Gang, because of the colour of their pistols, are thought to have begun the crime spree in October in order to obtain drug money.

Police said members of the gang, most of whom are from Latin America, raped five women during the robberies.
