Fugitive in kidnap case nabbed

BARCELONA – Spanish police have arrested a man wanted in Germany for the kidnapping last summer of the daughter of a famous scientist who was freed after her family paid a ransom of  EUR 700,000, authorities said on Friday.

Police spokesman said the Kazakhstan national fought with officers when he was detained in the Costa Brava town of L'Escala, where he had fled after the kidnapping.

The suspect was one of five men who allegedly broke into the Berlin home of the scientist last August and snatched his 20-year-old daughter.

After initially demanding a payment of EUR 1 million for her safe return, the kidnappers eventually agreed to a negotiated ransom of EUR 700,000.

A National Police spokesman said that with the latest arrest, four of the five gang members had been detained – two in Germany, one in Russia and one in Spain.
