French sociologist Alain Touraine and Britain's Polish-born sociologist Zygmunt Bauman were Thursday jointly awarded Spain's prestigious Prince of Asturias prize for communications and humanities.

Touraine was credited by the jury in a statement with helping the world understand the fundamental transformations taking place in society while Bauman, a university teacher, was credited with an in-depth study of the human condition in an "unstable, post-modern world."

Both were credited with creating independently from each other "the conceptual tools ... for understanding the changes and acceleration of the world in which we live," the statement said.

The Asturias foundation annually hands out eight awards, each worth 50,000 euros (61,000 dollars) in the fields of communication and humanities, scientific and technical research, social science, arts, letters, international cooperation, international understanding and sport.
