MADRID – Two conservative councillors in Galicia, northern Spain, an architect and the girlfriend of one of the councillors are the latest to be arrested in a series of scandals over corruption in local planning.

On Thursday, the Spanish daily El Pais cited sources close to the investigation, which led to the arrests in Gondomar on Wednesday, as saying the accused were caught red-handed accepting backhanders.

Spain has been rocked by planning scandals involving councillors from both the conservative and socialist parties in recent months.

The largest scandal emerged in Marbella, involving millions of euros of public money and politicians, business people and lawyers.

Expats who bought houses in Marbella were caught up in the mess after it was revealed that thousands of holiday homes were actually illegal.

Last April, the socialist government took the unprecedented step of dissolving the Marbella council in a bid to restore public confidence and clean up the local authority.

Investigations into corruption in Marbella and a number of other local authorities are continuing.
