Four workers were killed and one injured in an explosion at a fireworks factory in southern Spain on Thursday, local authorities said.

The blast took place in the town of Benacazon, near the city of Seville, for reasons that were not immediately clear.

"Four people are dead and one is seriously injured in hospital in Seville," said a spokesman for the municipal authority in Seville.

A member of the emergency services told Spanish national radio that the blast took place in a room where the explosive material was being stored.

Security forces cordoned off the area, where another fireworks factory is located, Spanish media said.
