MADRID – Four people died on Tuesday afternoon in a helicopter crash in the Spanish part of the Pyrenees.
According to Josep Maria Dalmau, the mayor of the Catalan area Torre de Cabdella, the helicopter had been hired by the electricity company REE to check a high-tension cable near Pobleta de Bellvei.
Shortly before 2pm, the helicopter crashed. Fire fighters went to the scene, but it was in an area of the mountains which was difficult to reach. The pilot, a supervisor from the electricity company and two technicians all died.
Dalmau said the causes of the accident were still unknown, however, he said it did not look as if the helicopter had crashed into an electricity cable since none of the cables in the area was damaged.
The accident took place in the same region where eight people died in 2002 in a helicopter crash in similar circumstances, also checking electricity lines.
