MADRID - Four young people, all aged under 25 according to police, died when their car caught fire after crashing off the road and overturning near the Lake of Sanabria in Zamora province early Wednesday morning.

The one male and three female victims all lived and worked in towns and villages around the lake, said the paramilitary Civil Guard.

The only person to escape the crash was the driver of the Citroen Saxo who was reported to be in a "serious" but not life-threatening condition after he was taken to the Hospital Virgen de la Concha in the provincial capital of Zamora.

He is thought to have escaped from the car before it caught fire, while the front seat passenger was killed after being catapulted through the windscreen. The other three passengers were engulfed by flames in the back seat.

It was the second serious accident in a matter of hours in Zamora. On Tuesday evening five members of the same French family were taken to hospital after their Peugeot 806 car crashed on the A-52 motorway near the town of Quiruelas de Vidriales.
