MADRID - Four construction workers were killed Monday on the site of the new Mestalla stadium in Valencia when a section of scaffolding collapsed. The fall, thought to have been from more than 10 metres' height, killed two of the workers instantly, while the other two died later in hospital from their injuries.
According to the labour union UGT, the accident was caused due to the fact that the scaffolding had been incorrectly mounted.
Nelson Rocha García, 24, and Luis Medardo Sinchigano, 38, who were both from South America, died instantly on impact with the ground. The third victim, Enrique Pradas Franco, 24, was Spanish, as was the fourth casualty, Manuel Cervera, a 22-year-old Spaniard.
Plans to build the new soccer stadium, when announced by former club president Juan Soler, were received with considerable opposition by local fans.
