MADRID — Seven people, including five from the same family, died in a road crash north of Madrid, police said.

Four of the children who were killed were not wearing seat belts in the back of the cars.

Seat belts have been compulsory to wear in all parts of a car since 2004.

Two vehicles collided on the outskirts of Siguenza, some 120 kilometres north-east of Madrid in the early afternoon.

Six people, including five from the same family and a friend, died in one vehicle while a woman died in the other vehicle.

Six people travelling in the second car, including the dead woman's husband, were hurt, five of them seriously, and were taken to hospital at nearby Guadalajara.
