Four children and an adult from a youth football team were killed when their minibus crashed into a mechanical digger on Thursday, police said.

The vehicles crashed on a road near Castuera in the southwestern Extremadura region on Thursday evening, a Civil Guard source told AFP.

"A minibus carrying a youth football team had a collision with a digger on the Castuera-Valsequillo road," said the source, who asked not to be named.

"For the moment there are four minors and one adult dead and six seriously injured," the source added, without giving further details.

Extremadura emergency services said on Twitter that overall 13 people were injured of which 11 were taken to hospital.

El Mundo newspaper reported online that the youngsters were aged 12 to 13 and were returning from playing in a competition.

It published a photograph of the white bus lying on its side by the highway as rescuers worked at the scene.

Last July a bus carrying more than 30 passengers careened off a highway near Avila in central Spain and ploughed into a metal safety barrier, killing nine passengers.
