BARCELONA - After 141 days of bringing nations together via a cultural, educational and environmentally-flavoured jamboree, a huge firework display brought the Forum 2004 to a close at the weekend.

The Forum was designed to bring peoples closer together and engage them in debates on anything from politics and the environment to eco-diversity and urban development.

Prince Felipe, heir to the throne and his wife Letizia the Princess of Asturias, attended the closing ceremony Sunday to end four months of concerts, exhibitions and round table debate co-promoted by Unesco and the regional Catalan government.

The event, while attracting three million visitors, fell short of its target of five million.

Organisers said the Forum had nonetheless laid the basis for moving towards a juster, safer, richer and more diverse world, as well as for achieving global peace.

But it warned that the world still had to deal with man-made threats of nuclear and environmental destruction along with poverty.

The next edition, in 2007, takes place in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey.
