BARCELONA – Corporate sponsorship of the Forum 2004 festival has reached EUR 81 million, organisers said Tuesday.

Grupo Panrico, the Spanish pastry giant, is the fifteenth sponsor of the three-month festival which starts on May 10.

Before the arrival of Panrico and with only a few months before its start, Forum 2004 had surpassed the expected level of private sector investment.

On the same scale as the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, organisers of the Forum 2004 say they are offering a cultural encounter for people from across the world.

The central themes of Forum 2004 will be cultural diversity, sustainable development and finding the conditions for peace.

Headliners lined up for the 141-day event include Iranian Nobel Peace Prize Winner Shirin Edabi and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and former US president Bill Clinton.

The festival, which lasts until September, will feature a huge range of concerts, shows, plays, dance performances and games for adults and children alike.

But Forum 2004 has met with criticism from those who feel it is simply an attempt for fashionable, First World Barcelona to cash in on a festival which is supposed to be about the Third World.

Members of the anti-globalisation movement feel it is a cynical attempt for Forum organisers and developers to make money.

The large scale of corporate sponsorship will provide critics with more ammunition  to attack the event.

The organisers have denied these allegations.

Panrico is to be the exclusive supplier of pastries for the festival after an agreement between Joan Clos, Forum 2004  president and the president of Panrico, Albert Costafreda.

The pastry company joins a list of  corporate sponsors which includes  Coca-Cola, Iberia airlines, the milk producers  Leche Pascual and the  drink makers Nestle.
