MADRID — Forty-five people were arrested in the biggest operation ever mounted against VAT fraud.

One company, Infinity Systems in Guadalajara, were said to have defrauded EUR 400 million in unpaid VAT since 2003.

Sources at the Treasury said 30 raids were carried out in Andalucia, Huesca and Guadalajara and a number of other regions.

One suspect arrested was Bernabe Noya, owner of the telecommunications company Meflur, along with two other people linked to the same company.

Sources told EFE news agency the operation was ordered by a judge at the Audiencia Nacional, Spain's leading court.
