BARCELONA — A forest fire which forced authorities to evacuate 600 people near Barcelona has been brought under control by fire fighters.

The blaze started in a forest area in Castellbisbal and destroyed almost 200 hectares of land.

Fire fighters were still dampening the ground near where the blaze started on Monday night to stop it starting up again.

Helicopters and planes carrying water were used to combat the blaze.

At least 600 people who live in the villages of Can Santeugeni and Can Nicolau de Dalt were only able to return to their homes this morning.

The fire damaged land on 14 farms and caused light injuries to a number of people who tried to help put out the blaze.

Authorities are investigating if the fire could have been started intentionally.
