VALLADOLID — Five men have been injured in an explosion at a chemical firm.
Three were seriously injured in the blast at the chemical firm Ragactives.
One has been flown by air ambulance to the major burns unit in the Hospital Universitario in Madrid.
Another three have been taken by ambulance to the Hospital Clínico Universitario in the capital. The fifth was taken to the Hospital Río Hortega in Valladolid.
Part of the laboratory where the blast happened has been totally destroyed.
María Jesús Garrido, who works at the company, said the explosion happened in the reactor section of the laboratory and caused part of the roof to cave in.
She said she watched as her colleagues escaped from the building suffering from burns and covered in blood.
One had lost part of a finger.
The laboratory is currently using acids in part of its work. But investigators have not established what caused the accident.
The company manufactures pharmaceutical products.
All companies within 300 metres of the explosion have been evacuated by order of the police.
The accident happened at the Technological Park industrial estate, near Boecillo, a town about 15 kilometres from Valladolid in north-western Spain.
In February last year, three workers were injured in an explosion at the company Crystal Pharma, on the same industrial estate.
