MADRID — Five workers travelling home in the early hours of the morning were killed in a car crash near Madrid.

Three others suffered serious injuries when the Opel Zafira in which they were all travelling in careered off the road near Colmenar Viejo.

It later emerged the driver had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

The accident happened just after 12am.

The car hit the barriers and then smashed into another barrier before coming to a stop.

Three of the men managed to get out of the vehicle but died shortly afterwards.

The others died in the mangled car or were cut out by fire fighters.

They were all men, aged between 30 and 40, and they had been working on the high speed AVE train line between Valladolid and Madrid.
