LAREDO – At least five people have been killed in a gas explosion in a block of flats in Laredo in Cantabria.
Authorities said a couple, their daughter, an elderly woman and her carer had all died from smoke inhalation.
An elderly woman told news agency Efe she had heard an “enormous crash” which she thought was thunder, followed by voices and shouts.
The explosion, caused by a gas canister, started a fire which quickly ravaged both the second and third floors of the Jai Alai building in the area Ensanche in Laredo.
Firefighters were called at 4.30am. They found the bodies of the five victims, four of which are Bizcayan, with the carer being Colombian, on the third floor of the flats, above the flat where the gas explosion started.
Another 10 people have been injured. Among them is a couple and two young children who have been taken to the Bilbao hospital Cruces. The rest of the injured have been taken to a hospital in Laredo.
