MADRID — A Spanish fisherman set fire to a boat and attacked the skipper with an iron bar before jumping into the sea, 180 miles off the Azores.
José Andrés Rodríguez Cornide, who has gone missing, started the fire in the engine room of the fishing boat Zamorano I, which is based in Burela, near Lugo in Galicia.
Two fishermen were injured accidentally.
The incident started just after 5am in the morning when, for reasons which are still not clear, Rodríguez started the blaze.
Then he grabbed an iron bar and broke into the cabin of the captain, hitting him on the legs repeatedly.
Then he threw himself into the sea.
One cook hit his head when he was trying to find his way through the ship, whose electricity supply had been cut by the fire.
A mechanic suffered minor burns when he was trying to put out the blaze.
Both were taken off the boat by a rescue helicopter.
The captain told rescue services Rodríguez had served on the ship since last August and had not been acting strangely.
