MADRID – Julio Cuesta is the first transsexual to officially change sex without undergoing an operation under a new law.

The 50-year-old ended a five year legal fight by taking advantage of the first Law of Gender Identification.

Magistrates in Valencia granted Cuesta the official right to call himself a man.

He was born a woman and has been a transsexual for 25 years.

The new law means transsexuals have the right to change their sex through a legal means, rather than having to undergo an operation.

Cuesta claims he was left for a month after an operation to change his sex went wrong and he cannot undergo the same operation again.

Previous legal battles to change his sex without surgery also failed until the Spanish parliament passed the new law last month.
