KARACHI – Edurne Pasabán became the first Spanish woman Monday to climb K2, the second-highest mountain in the world.

The Basque climber reached the 8,611-metre-high summit of K2, between the Chinese and Pakistani border, with three other male climbers.

It is the first time in two years that any climber had scaled the summit of what is considered to be the most dangerous mountain in the world.

Fifty-three mountaineers have died trying to scale the summit in the past 50 years.

Pasabán and her team planted a flag with the 191 names of all those who died in the Madrid terrorist massacre on the summit.

Sebastián Álvaro, director of the climbing team, said: "It was the best homage that we pay to the victims."
