GIBRALTAR - Princess Anne will be the first member of the British Royal Family to visit Gibraltar in 50 years, it was reported Wednesday.

The Princess is to visit the colony Monday on an official trip which has sparked anger in Spain.

Princess Anne is to spend a number of days in Gibraltar as a guest at the governor's residence, The Convent Place.

Francis Richards, the governor of Gibraltar, will accompany the Princess during the visit.

It is the first Royal visit since the Queen visited the Rock in 1954.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana started their honeymoon when they stopped off at Gibraltar in 1981, but did not stay.

According to official sources in Gibraltar, the visit of Princess Anne is being seen by the population on the Rock as a way of marking the 300th anniversary of the colony as a British colony this year.

But for diplomatic reasons, the Royal household would not confirm this was the purpose of the Princess's visit.
