MADRID - A fire at the Cofrentes nuclear power plant in eastern Spain resulted in a shutdown of the facility, the Nuclear Security Council, or CSN, said in a statement.

Officials at the Cofrentes plant, who are investigating the cause of the fire, said the blaze started at 11:45 a.m. (0945 GMT) on Thursday and was extinguished an hour later.

All the safety systems at the nuclear facility functioned correctly and the fire-suppression team was able to put out the blaze before an emergency was declared.

The incident did not harm any workers or the environment, the CSN said.
