MADRID – Authorities at Barcelona airport reject 200 people a month whom they suspect of posing as tourists in a bid to enter Spain illegally, the daily El Pais reported on Friday.

The paper said more came from Latin America than other countries and others came from Asia and Africa.

Typical giveaway stories include passengers who claim to be visiting the beach in Madrid or the Giralda in Valencia, a monument which is actually in Seville, customs agents told El Pais.

The agents admitted certain nationalities attract more attention than others but denied that was discriminatory.

“A Canadian hardly has room for stamps in his passport. But an African may have a brand new passport. That’s a sign”, said one official.
