MARBELLA — Police arrested the former mayor of Marbella on Wednesday in the latest stage of an operation against a multi-billion euro civic corruption scandal in the Andalusian city.

Julián Munoz, 58, is accused of bribery and theft of public funds.

Munoz is the latest person to be detained as part of Operation Malaya, which was launched in March against council officials who were allegedly taking bribes to grant illegal building deals to property moguls on the Costa del Sol.

The mayor of Marbella, the head of urban planning and the head of the local police were among 50 people arrested.

The central government in Madrid took the unprecedented step of dissolving the city council in Marbella, which is being run by a management team.

Police carried out a number of other arrests in Marbella and Malaga on Wednesday in connection with the same operation.

They arrested Pedro Pérez, 46, a former Marbella councillor, and three leading executives in the building firm Aifos.

They are the president, Jesús Ruiz Casado, the general director Jenaro Briales Navarrete and José Andrés León, the finance director.
