MADRID - The European commissioner for economic affairs, Joaquin Almunia, hopes to raise growth forecasts for the 12-nation eurozone, it was reported Thursday.

The Spanish economic daily Cinco Dias published an interview with Almunia in which he forecast growth from next month.

"In October, we hope to be able to raise growth forecasts for the eurozone," Almunia was quoted as saying.

Last month, he estimated that economic growth would be stronger than the 1.7 percent forecast by the executive European Commission a few months earlier.
