MADRID - Hopeful Spaniards were vying with the British and French on Friday to win the new EUR 15 million lottery jackpot.
EuroMillions, a mega draw for Spain, Britain and France, was launched with the hope it will boost flagging interest in lotteries.
For the price of a EUR 2 ticket players buy a shot at a jackpot that could reach EUR 15 million.
But the odds are a staggering one in 76 million.
It was not, however, Spain's first taste of a super lottery.
El Gordo - or the Fat One - is a national obsession that grips the country every Christmas.
The draw is made every 22 December and players have the chance to win EUR 1.8 billion.
It is thought to be the biggest jackpot in the world, and is popular with players from the United States who can buy tickets online.
The winnings are usually shared into smaller 'jackpots' so no-one usually claims the rollover prize.
The EuroMillions draw will be held every Friday, with the first numbers drawn in Paris at 8.15pm.
The hope of the organisers behind the new lottery is that other European countries will be encouraged to join in.
