BARCELONA – The leader of ETA’s political wing said on Tuesday it was an “error” to try to secure a Basque state through armed struggle.
In an interview with Catalunya Radio, Arnaldo Otegi, head of Batasuna, said: “Nobody would suggest it and if they did it would be an error to build an independent Basque state from armed struggle or from the imposition of armed struggle because in social and political terms you could not sustain it.”
But Otegi, who has served time in jail for being a member of ETA, refused to condemn the Basque separatist group.
He said it is not possible to build an independent project if it was not through democratic means.
Otegi said he was “absolutely sure” ETA did not Intend. to form a state through military means “but at times there are no democratic means to build an independent state”.
ETA has killed more than 800 people in more than four decades of terrorist attacks in order to establish an independent Basque state in northwest Spain and southwest France.
