LONDON – Sir Elton John has blamed his close friend  Victoria Beckham for David’s alleged affair with Rebecca Loos.

The singer claimed the Real Madrid player's marriage was “pretty awful at one point.”

But he said: “They seem to have come through it.”

Sir Elton, 57, claims Victoria Beckham, plunged her marriage into crisis by not moving to Spain with Beckham when he signed for Real Madrid.

He said the England captain would have been “driven crazy” by being alone.

When asked about Beckham’s alleged affairs, Sir Elton remarked: “Basically, the worm turned.”

He said:  "I just think that things went wrong when he first went to Real Madrid. I would have thought the best idea would have been for Victoria to go with him. I think he missed her and the boys terribly.

"If you live six months in a hotel room in Madrid — or anywhere — it’s going to drive you crazy. I think they should have gone together as a family.

"I think what’s happened now is that she’s so disillusioned with all that career stuff that she’s quite happy to be there."

He added: "I don’t think they handled it very well. They should have just a put a statement out saying something like: ‘Every marriage has its ups and downs and we’re just going through a down phase at the moment.

"But they just denied it and kept denying it, and there were obviously problems . . . which now they seem to have sorted out.

"I think they got distracted by things like going to Japan and the lure of all that money.

"In retrospect, it was a big mistake. Did we try to tell them not to do all that?

Yes, we probably did. Sometimes people don’t listen. Basically they’re two people that love each other very much."

Sir Elton — godfather to the pair’s sons Brooklyn, five, and Romeo, two — was speaking to the British Heat Magazine.
