MADRID - A 54-year-old woman was run over and killed by a cleaning tractor as she lay on the sands at Alicante's El Postiguet beach early on Thursday morning.
The medical service SAMU said the woman died almost immediately in the accident at 7.45am, at a spot near the district tourism office.
One witness told the EFE news agency that he saw the front wheels of the cleaning vehicle hit the head of the woman as it turned around.
He and other bathers said the dead woman, identified only as M.H.T. and who lived nearby, came to the beach virtually every morning with her sister. Her sister was in the sea at the time of the accident.
The witness criticised the city authorities for cleaning the beach so late in the day. "In August, older people come down to the beach fairly early. By that time the beach ought to have been all cleaned," he said.
The city hall's security department claimed later that the woman's body had been covered by a beach mat when she was hit by the tractor.
The driver was not aware that he had run over the woman until he was stopped by a group of people who saw the accident.
