MADRID — Two ETA terrorists were jailed for 20 years on Monday for a bomb attack which left a socialist councillor with only one leg.
Asier Arzallus and Iker Olabarrieta, who were convicted of attempted murder, planted the bomb in a car owned by Eduardo Madina in February 2002.
Madina survived the bomb attack because the bomb was not planted properly but lost a leg.
Two other ETA terrorists, Gaizka Olabarrieta and Gorka Aztiria, were also convicted of the offence of being an accessory after the fact or being connected with the attack.
Last Saturday, another ETA terrorist who was linked to the same attack, Eneko Bilbao, was arrested in France with two other members of the Basque separatist organisation.
Olabarrieta and Arzalluz were also ordered to pay compensation to Madina of EUR 3 million and told they must have no contact with him or his family for five years.
In an emotional speech, Madina told the court: "In my case, they did it at night and a shadow of pain and sadness enveloped me and my family."
He said his parents became depressed after the attack and his mother died of a heart attack ten months later.
Madina blame the attack for his mother's death.
