ETA political wing says ceasefire is contribution to peace
ETA's announcement of a ceasefire Sunday is a contribution to peace that opens a new political phase, the armed separatist group's banned political wing Batasuna said.
"ETA's unilateral and indefinite decision to stop its armed actions without conditions" is an "unquestionable contribution to peace", said a Batasuna spokesman, speaking in the Basque coastal city of San Sebastian.
"The commitment taken by ETA makes the opening of a new political phase (in the Basque region) irreversible," he added.
ETA declared in a video statement Sunday that it had decided several months ago to halt violent attacks but did not say whether the ceasefire was permanent or temporary.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's government, which took a political pounding when ETA broke its last ceasefire in 2006 and bombed Madrid's main airport, did not react immediately.
The Interior Ministry was still examining the declaration, a spokesman said.
Government officials were quoted in the El Pais newspaper as saying the declaration was a move in the right direction but ETA must still definitively abandon the armed struggle.
