MADRID-A Spanish court has handed down a 35-year prison sentence to ETA member Sebastian Echaniz Alcorta, who was extradited from Venezuela in 2002 to stand trial for the 1982 murder of the police chief of a northern Spanish town.

Spain's national court, which handles major corruption, terrorism and drug cases, also ordered Echaniz, who had lived in Venezuela since the time he fled Spain in 1983, to pay the family of police officer Jose Aibar Yanez close to USD400,000 in damages.

Aibar headed the local force in Baracaldo.

The court found Echaniz guilty of the murder along with four other members of the Basque separatist movement, one of whom died in a shootout.
