SAN SEBASTIAN — Three masked men burst into a magistrates court, threw petrol bombs and set fire to the building.
The court building in the Basque town of Oiartzun was badly damaged by fire. No-one was hurt but an employee was thrown out of the building by the arsonists.
The attack is thought to be linked to ETA, the Basque separatist terrorist organisation, which has staged similar attacks against court buildings in the past.
A spokesman for the Oiartzun council said it was "absolutely repulsed" by this attack.
"This type of action, like threats of extortion, does nothing to help bring a necessary climate for peace or stabilisation in the Basque Country," he added.
Though there have been widespread rumours of a truce, ETA has carried out 11 bomb attacks this year alone and has restarted an aggressive extortion campaign aimed at Basque businesses.
