MADRID - Highway authorities will be carrying out 200,000 breathalyser tests up until 23 December, it was announced yesterday. The measures are part of a special Christmas campaign against drink driving, which is a contributing factor for between 30 and 50 percent of deaths on the roads.

The traffic department of the Civil Guard will put more than 800 checkpoints in place, with the aim of carrying out around 15,000 breathalyser tests a day.

After a recent reform of the penal code, driving with more than 1.2 grams of alcohol per litre of blood will now be considered a criminal offence.
