MADRID –The Spanish government is to double cash payments to victims of terrorism, the Interior Minister said Monday.
José Antonio Alonso said next year victims and their families will be paid a total of EUR 120,000 – double what has been available to help those whose lives have been ruined by terrorist attacks.
The cash is not just for victims of the March bombings in Madrid in which 191 people died and 1,500 were injured.
The extra money will also go to help those who have been victims of ETA bombings.
The Basque terrorist group has planted nine different bombs at tourist destinations across Spain throughout August.
Five people were slightly injured but no lives were lost.
The government will make cash payouts to support victims and their families a priority, with money for social, legal and psychological help.
Those who were going to claim more compensation from the government should do so within a month of the order being published in the Official Bulletin of State, which details government action, on 1 September.
