TARRAGONA - A shark that for a week had been causing consternation along the beaches of the north-eastern Spanish city of Tarragona was caught by a team of divers with their bare hands, reports said Tuesday.

The team of two divers and a Red Cross aid from an aquarium in Barcelona held a "wrestling match" with the 1.6-metre-long sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus) before dozens of onlookers.

The shark is to be temporarily housed at the Barcelona aquarium before being brought out to high seas in the coming days.

The team received minor injuries in the bare-handed contest, which was entered into "because it was the gentlest method for the shark," diver Jose Martinez said.

Spanish authorities issued a ban on swimming at the popular Tarragona beach after the shark was discovered prowling the area.

The ban is to be lifted only after experts verify that no additional sharks were in the area.
