MADRID – Spanish dental surgeons joined growing criticism on Thursday of a new television makeover show which they charged trivialises their profession and violates patient privacy.

"We are against any activity in which the dental profession becomes entertainment and we neither support nor will take part in the program "Cambio Radical," the College of Dental Surgeons said in a statement.

"Cambio Radical" (or "Radical Change") is Spain's version of the U.S. hit show "Total Makeover" in which individuals submit to cosmetic surgery, dental work, dermatological treatment, a physical fitness regimen, and makeup and wardrobe advice to become more attractive.

Since its debut earlier this month, the programme has also been lambasted by the Association of Cosmetic Surgeons, women's groups and others.

Along with trivialising the profession and violating patient privacy, the dental surgeons said the producers of the programme do not adequately inform the patients of the risks and the fact that the outcome of procedures may be temporary.
