MADRID – Thirty-seven people died in traffic accidents on Spanish highways at the weekend, the second-highest weekend death toll so far this year, traffic officials announced on Monday.

According to the General Traffic Directorate, in the 30 accidents which occurred between midday Friday and midnight Sunday, 15 people were seriously injured.

Authorities said that traffic was heavy as many people were travelling ahead of the national holiday on 15 August or were starting or returning from their fortnight's vacations.

This year's worst traffic death toll occurred on the weekend of 18-20 May when 39 accidents took the lives of 39 people.

Until 31 July, 1,578 people have died on Spanish highways, a 12 percent fall from the same period in 2006.
