GAVA – A 40-year-old woman died Sunday from burns suffered in a gas explosion at a block of flats in northeast Spain, taking the death toll from the accident to five, authorities said.

The woman sustained burns to 90 percent of her body in Wednesday's blast at Gava, south of Barcelona.

A 60-year-old woman died of her injuries on Thursday, followed by a 17-year-old girl and 41-year-old man on Friday and a 26-year-old man on Saturday. All were members of the same family.

Seventeen people remain in hospital, all in very serious to critical condition, most of them with severe life-threatening burns, the director of the Catalan regional health service Marina Geli said.

Catalan police said the explosion was caused by a gas leak which devastated the three-storey building.
