SAN SEBASTIAN – "Eastern Promises" an organised crime thriller directed by David Cronenberg of Canada is to open this year's San Sebastian Film Festival, the organisers of the prestigious event announced on Tuesday.

Starring Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts and Vincent Cassel, the film will be in competition at the 55th edition of the festival which runs from 20-29 September in the Basque coastal city.

Cronenberg directed Mortensen in the highly-acclaimed 2005 film "A History of Violence" which won a number of awards on the international festival circuit and was nominated for two Oscars in the best supporting actor and best adapted screenplay categories.

The British jewel heist film "Flawless", directed by Michael Radford and starring Michael Caine and Demi Moore, will close the festival but it is not in competition, the organisers said.

Two Spanish films, "Siete Mesas de Billar Francés" by Gracia Querejeta and "Mataharis" by Iciar Bollain, will also debut at the festival in competition.
