MADRID – Police on Friday appealed for help in tracking down the people who deliberately wasted 70,000 litres of water in Tarragona.
Last Saturday, said the police, someone opened the sluices at the reserve deposit at Alforja. The criminals let almost all the remaining water in the reserve escape.
Alforja's town hall said the water was intended to supply households until the end of the month.
On Tuesday night, the authorities had to cut off water from homes until Wednesday morning. This week, drinking water has been trucked in.
The loss of the 70,000 litres comes during Spain's worst drought in 60 years, at a time when the country is being ravaged by forest fires and authorities are appealing to households to conserve as much water as they can.
