FUERTEVENTURA — A young couple were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of the their six-month-old daughter.
The baby was the victim of a violent attack and died last Friday, police said.
It was originally thought she died because of illness or neglect.
Her mother is 18 and her father is 20.
Doctors noticed the baby had bruises on her body when she was admitted to the Hospital General de Fuerteventura.
She was dead on arrival.
They indicated she had been the victim of a violent attack, according to the local newspaper Canarias 7.
The baby had died at the house where her parents lived in Puerto del Rosario.
The father told police his girlfriend had left the girl for 20 hours without feeding her.
The child was vomitting everything which she was eating, he said.
This made doctors initially believe she had died through the negligence of one of the parents.
But it later emerged the child's birth had not been registered, nor received her injections or any other form of medical attention during her short life.
The couple appeared in court on Tuesday but a judge declared no further details of the case should be disclosed as is the normal practice in Spain in cases of this kind.
